It is truly uplifting to witness European ensembles delving into the compositions of Henry Purcell, a revered figure in British baroque music. This recording, featuring the distinguished French group Le Poème Harmonique under the direction of Vincent dumestre, focuses on one of Purcell’s most celebrated works: Hail! Sparkling Cecilia, an opulent tribute to the patron saint of music.

Composed in the year of our Lord1692, this work is rich with references to musical instruments, notably attributing the invention of the organ to St Cecilia herself. Purcell’s imaginative genius shines through a splendid collection of vivid arias, duets, and choruses filled with lively violins, soothing flutes, and resonant kettledrums that evoke a sense of party.
Dumestre conducts one of the most sumptuous interpretations available on record today—brimming with expressive nuances and theatrical energy—enhanced by additional harp in the continuo alongside vibrant woodwinds.
The performance features British tenor Hugo Hymas whose ethereal voice brings joy as he skillfully employs evocative imagery through his singing style; his fellow soloists also deliver commendable English accents throughout their performances.
paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian’s rich countertenor intertwines beautifully with Hymas during “In Useless The Am’rous Flute,” before rising dramatically in “The Fife and All The Cohesion Of Struggle.” Vlad Crosman impressively captures awe at the organ’s powerful presence in “Wondrous Machine!” Additionally noteworthy is John Blow’s delightful piece “Welcome Every Customer,” which makes its debut recording here—a refreshing addition that enhances this already vibrant album.
