Emperor concluded their last official album in 2001, yet discussions persist about the potential for new Emperor releases. The band’s frontman, Ihsahn, born as Vegard Sverre Tveitan, has been queried on this subject despite his active solo career. This curiosity is quite reasonable—Emperor embarked on a tour after a 15-year hiatus two years ago, and Ihsahn had previously remarked, “There will never be any more live shows from Emperor.
Ihsahn elaborated on his outlook regarding the timing of the reunion tour during an interview with Jorge Botas at Steel International. He noted that fans cherish their music as “they recognize its authenticity. It’s not crafted for commercial gain or business motives. It’s genuine art created solely for its own merit. While there are certainly financial benefits too producing such work,I don’t believe any of us would want those motivations to dictate our creative process” (transcribed by Blabbermouth).
If there were ever an possibility for new material from Emperor, it would arise from their aspiration to create something meaningful: “If everything falls into place and we’ve been performing live consistently, then if we were to create something fresh, I think it should stem from a place of authenticity.”
You can delve into all of Ihsahn’s thoughts regarding his solo projects and the future direction of Emperor in the interview below.
