p > Doja Cat conveyed that she needed to express herself through * Scarlet *. In an interview published by The New York Times on September 5 (Friday), the artist known for “Agora Hills” reflected on her rap-focused fourth studio album and referred to it as a “substantial release.”

p > “Not to undermine its meaning, but it was quite an experience; I just had to get this out—it felt like a substantial release for me,” she shared with the publication.“I believed that addressing this would require crafting music that was more visceral or perhaps more emotional or even angrier or sadder.”

*Scarlet* served as Doja’s assertion of being recognized seriously as a lyricist—a goal she largely accomplished through tracks like “Attention,” “WYM Freestyle,” and the commercially successful hit “[Paint The Town pink](https://musicsoundwizard.com/).” Reflecting further on this journey, Doja admitted, “I enjoyed performing it live; though, it didn’t quite lead me where I wanted to go.So now I want to return to what feels authentic.”

The Times emphasized that this “return” marks Doja’s shift back towards pop with her upcoming project titled *Vie*.She characterized this new endeavor as an evolution of both *Planet Her* and *Hot Pink*, infused with ’80s synths and an upbeat R&B vibe.
“It’s openly uplifting and adopts a playful tone which is enjoyable,” shared the artist behind “Ouchies.” “I always strive for that sense of fun without crossing into silliness.” To bring this vision to life, she collaborated with Jack Antonoff who produced nine out of the fifteen tracks on the album. Notably, they recently worked together on last month’s track titled “Jealous Form.”
For now at least, Doja seems focused on distancing herself from rap influences. Interestingly enough,*scarlet*, which Rap-Up acknowledged among the [Best Rap Albums of 2023](https://musicsoundwizard.com/),isn’t the first project she’s dismissed while transitioning toward another full-length release.
Loyal fans may recall how she previously described both albums—*Planet Her* and *Hot Pink*—as merely average pop offerings and little more than “[money-grabs](https://musicsoundwizard.com/)” in the months leading up to releasing *Scarlet.*
