Cabin in the Sky marks the tenth studio release from De la Soul, and it holds particular significance as their first album following the passing of founding member Trugoy the Dove, also known as Dave Jolicoeur, in 2023. This album can be viewed as a conceptual exploration of mortality and what lies beyond. The opening spoken-word segment by actor Giancarlo Esposito sets a serious tone, yet listeners are quickly reminded that this is quintessentially a De La Soul project: their signature style of laid-back, eternally optimistic plunderphonics remains intact. The rich orchestration found in Yuhdontstop introduces an album that bursts forth in vibrant colors; from the lively Natalie Cole sample on Will Be to Maseo’s cheerful interjections on Merciless Summers Bring Fire Life!!, Cabin in the Sky radiates warmth and positivity—a perfect antidote for colder days.

The overarching theme of life after death seems to have been incorporated into this project somewhat posthumously following Trugoy’s passing; his vocals still feature prominently throughout many tracks, which remain firmly rooted within De La Soul’s established surrealistic universe. As a notable example, Patty Cake stands out with its minimalist approach that reimagines classic playground chants—an expression of self-love not previously explored on any De La Soul record before now. However, at over seventy minutes long, Cabin in the Sky can occasionally feel drawn out; particularly towards its conclusion where it lacks some of the liveliness present earlier on. A notable exception is found within its titular track where Maseo and Pos pay heartfelt homage to Trugoy along with others they have lost—imbued with reflection yet never losing its enchanting essence.
