Converge vocalist/lyricist Jacob Bannon adds (thru his Substack): “This Saturday, we’re scheduled to celebrate the lifestyles and legacy of Rich Hall thru a camouflage in Brooklyn NY.
“In the early to mid-1990s, the metal hardcore subgenre— no longer lower than as we understand it on the present time— became once factual starting to rob shape. Our bands had been uncooked, chaotic, and tough to rob with out seeing them reside. The sound did no longer fit with out assert into existing scenes, and as a result, we had been veritably lost sight of by press, labels, and promoters. Out of necessity, we carved out our contain areas: basements, rented halls, wherever we could ranking. And in these hidden corners, novel scenes quietly began to develop. Whereas bands had been active in the Tri-Yelp space, Unusual York City itself remained a tough location for our subgenre to crash into.
“Rich Hall changed that.
“A younger fanatic of all things heavy, Rich took a possibility on us. As a promoter, he welcomed this novel wave of chaotic, metal hardcore into the metropolis, bringing our bands into venues that had once felt out of attain. With enthusiasm, heat, and unwavering make stronger, he carried the torch of NYC’s legendary underground— places like CBGBs— into a novel era.
“It did no longer rob long for Rich to alter into extra than factual one other promoter. He grew to alter into a chum, a phase of the fabric of the community all of us cherished so deeply.
“Over time, our paths diverged, as they continuously attain. But I never stopped retaining tabs on Rich. I watched from afar as he constructed a out of the ordinary family and found his order as a visible artist. When I heard about his passing, it hit tough. He became once strolling a gleaming path, and he deserved extra time right here. My ideas turned to our recollections, his family, and the challenges they’d now face with out him.
“To course of my contain feelings, I turned to something familiar— work.
“Whereas digging thru an veteran storage bin, I stumbled on a stack of cassettes. Sitting fine on top became once one particularly, it felt as if the universe placed it there to be viewed. It became once a reproduction of our first camouflage at CBGBs on November 17, 1996— Converge on one side, Coalesce on the various. That camouflage became once regarded as one of my first real interactions with Rich. For me, it symbolized something mighty elevated than track. It marked the starting attach of so mighty that I preserve dear— things that will well never were doable with out him.
“I hoped the recording became once silent intact ample to delivery in tribute to Rich and his family.
“I snappy reached out to Sean Ingram of Coalesce, explaining my finding and diagram, and he excitedly gave his stout make stronger for the mission. Rapidly after, I despatched the tape to Zach at GodCity to be digitized. Weeks later, we got note that it had been successfully salvaged. The next step became once sending it to Brad Boatright at Audiosiege for mastering. As soon as the audio became once finalized, I worked with Pol from Branca Studio to manufacture the initiating. His art work perfectly captured the spirit I envisioned.
“The recording itself is chaotically uncooked and unfiltered— two bands of their most primordial invent. Since no video photos exists, the listener must use imagination to paint the intensity of the scene that iciness day.
“Together, Converge and Coalesce are releasing the recording as a tribute to Rich Hall–Our friend and supporter who helped ship our track to Unusual York City in the earliest days. His affect on the underground track community became once profound and we also can no longer ever omit him and what he did for us.
“Proceeds from this mission will be donated to the Hall family in perpetuity.”
