- Kendrick Lamar ranks among Ab-Soul’s top five favorite rappers.
In a recent episode of UPROXX’s “Sound Check,” Ab-Soul, the talented artist from Carson, was invited to share his preferences between two tracks from a renowned TDE artist—Kendrick Lamar, who remains closely associated with the label.
His choices included “Cash Trees,” featuring Jay Rock from the acclaimed album *good kid, m.A.A.d city*, and the commercially prosperous track “luther” featuring SZA. While “luther” dominated charts for an impressive 13 weeks on the Hot 100, some classics simply hold a unique place in music history.
Ultimately, Ab-Soul chose “Cash Trees,” playfully suggesting that Kendrick had an unfair advantage with “luther.” The song cleverly samples Luther Vandross’ classic hit “If This World where Mine” and combines it with SZA’s captivating vocals—a formula that has proven successful for Kendrick, who boasts 22 Grammy awards. “He knows exactly what he’s doing,” Soulo remarked.
Reflecting on their friendship and collaborations like “Turn Me Up,” Ab-Soul described Kendrick as genuinely funny in real life. Earlier in their discussion, he listed his top five rappers: JAY-Z, Nas, Kendrick (K.Dot), Lil Wayne, and Lupe Fiasco—with Eminem as a close sixth.
When asked if last year’s feud involving Drake affected Kendrick’s standing in his eyes, Soulo confidently replied that it wouldn’t change anything; they have consistently supported each other through various challenges.
Looking ahead to 2024, Ab-Soul mentioned that reconciliation is still possible for Drake after Kendrick released his pointed diss track titled “Not like Us.” Recently,he also directed some sharp remarks towards Joey Badass following perceived jabs at TDE and possibly at Lamar himself.
in May of this year during an interview with *Red Bull*, Ab-Soul expressed how much he has learned from Kendrick throughout their careers together. He emphasized that being a recording artist encompasses more than just writing lyrics; it involves three distinct skills: songwriting, recording techniques, and live performance artistry. He feels deeply grateful for all he has absorbed from K.Dot in these areas.
