One of the key artists driving the global rise of Afrobeats, Nigerian musician David Adedeji Adeleke, better known as Davido, has not yet reached the same level of fame in the UK as his peers Burna Boy, Wizkid, or Rema. His body of work does not include a chart-topping hit that can rival tracks like “Final Final,” “One dance,” or “Silent Down.” Additionally, his most recent album indicates that his popularity may not be as extensive as theirs.
Davido consistently produces albums featuring approximately 17 tracks filled wiht rich and smooth beats that are perfect for various environments—from beachside lounges to barbershops. At its peak, 5ive serves as a commendable successor to 2023’s Timeless, which highlighted Afropop’s remarkable ability to blend influences from multiple genres into its engaging and rhythmic soundscapes.
The song “Be There Indifferent” features an addictive chorus while the chic guitar melodies in “With You” suggest a disco-inspired vibe. Davido reveals his vocal talent on “Don’t know,” showcasing a more introspective side; meanwhile, other songs envelop listeners in uplifting harmonies. However, there is little else that distinguishes this album beyond these standout moments. The introductory poem feels excessively grandiose and somewhat tedious; furthermore, the middle section tends to be repetitive and lacks ambition. A more streamlined collection could have significantly enhanced its overall impact.
