The Impact of Kendrick’s Return to Toronto
>
If there are still skeptics regarding Kendrick Lamar’s victory in last year’s rap rivalry with Drake, they need only observe the warm reception he received while performing “Not Like Us” in the Canadian rapper’s hometown. On Thursday night (June 12), the Compton artist alongside SZA graced Toronto’s Rogers Centre as part of their highly anticipated “Monumental National tour.” This marked Lamar’s first visit to Toronto since his lyrical exchanges with Drake, and many fans eagerly awaited this moment.
This time around, rather than relying on elaborate stagecraft or directly addressing the feud during his set, Lamar let his music speak for itself. After delivering “Not Like Us,” which has gained notable traction over the past year, all that could be heard was a chorus of fans chanting “One more time,” requesting an encore performance.
The Success of “Not Like Us”
“Not Like Us,” released last year, has seen remarkable success since its debut. The track dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three consecutive weeks and garnered five Grammy Awards at the recent ceremony—recognitions including Album of the Year and Song of the Year among others.
The Timing Coincidence?
on that same Thursday evening when Kendrick took center stage in Toronto, Drake had plans to host a livestream session with Kai Cenat aimed at discussing video treatments for “SOMEBODY LOVES ME.” While some viewed this as mere coincidence given both events occurring simultaneously, others speculated that it might have been an attempt by Drake to divert attention away from Lamar’s performance. Ultimately, however, this broadcast was postponed without clarification.
tour Details Ahead
Lamar is set to return to Rogers Centre on Friday night (June 13) as part of his ongoing tour before heading back stateside for two additional shows prior to making their way across Europe through August. The acclaimed rapper will conclude this leg solo in Australia come December.
