bobby Liebling, teh frontman of Pentagram, recently found himself in the spotlight after a TikTok clip showcasing him seemingly zoning out during a performance went viral. In an intriguing conversation with Altars Of steel, Liebling revealed that this newfound fame hasn’t considerably impacted the band’s financial situation, as their tour dates had already sold out prior to the video’s release.
What’s even more astounding is that Liebling now requires police escorts at shows due to being swarmed by fans. He mentioned that he frequently encounters excited supporters wherever he goes, suggesting that perhaps Pentagram is on its way to becoming a household name in the doom metal genre.
“The entire experience was overwhelming at first. It felt quite surreal,” shared Liebling. “I always fantasized about posting something on Instagram or Facebook that would go viral one day, but I never expected it to happen so quickly. It was like… wow! Be careful what you wish for becuase it escalated faster than I could have imagined. But honestly, it’s been pretty amazing; after over fifty years of making music, it’s fun to be recognized as an amusing figure.”
“Our visibility skyrocketed almost overnight, which clearly indicates its potential impact. We’ve been approached by TSA agents at airports and even pilots stepping out of their cockpits just to say hello. Soccer moms and groups of kids are stopping us too—it’s absolutely wild! I still find it hard to process all this attention; everywhere we go someone recognizes me and says, ‘Aren’t you that guy?'”
Liebling continued: “When this all unfolded, we were already on tour; thus ticket sales didn’t really increase as venues were sold out during our West Coast leg when it happened. The same goes for our South American tour—those shows were mostly sellouts as well.”
“I’m not sure how much this has truly enhanced attendance figures; however, I do recognize the surge in perceived popularity—though I’m not entirely sure why—that has taken off dramatically. It’s been quite a journey with fans literally trying to push through crowds just for a glimpse of us. And having police escorts escorting us back to our van post-show? That’s just insane!”
